To Dance: A Ballerina’s Graphic Novel is a memoir of Siena Cherson Siegel’s life as a ballet student in New York City.
To Dance: A Ballerina’s Graphic Novel is a memoir of Siena Cherson Siegel’s time spent as a ballet student in New York City. It reveals dance as the constant in Siena’s life, a source of fulfillment whether she was living in Puerto Rico, Boston, or New York City, as well as during her parents’ divorce. Though Siena suffered an ankle injury at eighteen and stopped dancing, she later returned to the barre because, as she says, “dancing fills a space in me.”
To Dance is beautifully illustrated by Mark Siegel, Siena Cherson Siegel’s husband. Siegel’s watercolor and ink illustrations perfectly compliment the novel’s subject matter with their feminine fluidity and pretty colors. Allowing readers a peek inside the daily life of a ballet student (from the pain of her first toe shoes to the thrill of performing with a famous ballerina), To Dance attracts an audience that many wouldn’t typically associate with the graphic novel genre.
